Faster than the speed of light?

May 28, 2020

Over the years as my children were growing up we discussed many things - prompted by inquisitive minds and questions. Why can’t you go faster than light came the question one day. I just don’t see why it’s not possible. Their not entirely to be trusted father just stating that it is so was rightly dismissed. Probably after offering a rather poor explanation.

So like many, their by now well developed intuitions were being confronted by the laws of physics. But to paraphrase the famous physicist Richard Feynman - if you can’t explain it you don’t understand it, leading me to dig out my old relativity books to see if I could offer a better explanation. Therein lies the title of the site.

But there was always so many questions and as the children became young adults and left for university the opportunity for more discussions arose. Given there were students of physics, astronomy and economics the latter of which I now had a degree in from the Open Univiersity I was keen to show off and apply the Feynman principle. Turns out I don’t really understand much after all.

Anyway these pages are a bid to improve on my explanations reflecting interesting things we may have discussed or simply topics I have been trying to get my head around. So they are here for no good reason other than just that. Oh and its an opportunity to play with web technologies and see how technical you can get these days. Hope you enjoy.
